History
Fractured Shakespeare was birthed from the idea that, even taken outside of the original plays,
Shakespeare’s words express a broad range of emotions with such depth and intensity that we can use them to tell new stories which gives us a unique window into the human experience.
Fractured Shakespeare began as a creative exercise and a challenge. The first public appearance of FS was for the 100 Day Project on Instagram. FS founder Charissa J. Adams, challenged herself to combine two unrelated lines or passages of Shakespeare into one excerpt, which was then performed, filmed and posted on Instagram, every day for 100 days, resulting in #100daysofFracturedShakespeare. After producing those 100 days, she wrote and performed a FS monologue on the subject of consent for Cabaret Consensual which is hosted by More Than No, a nonprofit organization aimed at championing consent-culture through artistic activism. A few months later, together with co-producers Karil Lee Cartwright and Tad Shafer, FS developed that monologue into the short film, Was it Rape, Then?“ which was released online in 2017 and it was featured in Huffington Post, Bustle, Stage Raw and Shakespeare Magazine.
In 2019, Fractured Shakespeare made its stage debut at the Hollywood Fringe Festival with the World Premier of Speak I Will, a series of monologues on the subject of speaking up and speaking truth. Along with a nearly sold-out run, Speak I Will went on to win the Hollywood Fringe Encore Producers’ Award 2019!
